Studies, Reports, External Resources

OSSTF/FEESO is strongly committed to supporting and promoting evidence-informed practices in public education. We believe evidence-informed decision-making is the best way to ensure a safe and rewarding workplace for members and, as importantly, a robust and world-class education system for students. We act on this commitment, in part, by producing and supporting original research. OSSTF/FEESO commissions studies, partners with independent researchers and undertakes our own studies. This page provides access to a wide range of research resources.

Please take some time to explore the sections found below. The “Studies” section includes original research that was produced, supported or commissioned by OSSTF/FEESO. Under the “Reports” section, you will find the results of work by OSSTF/FEESO’s working groups, committees, and councils. Finally, under the “External Resources” section we have provided links to the research homes of education unions from across Canada. We hope you will find the resources on this page to be interesting and useful and that you will share them with other supporters of a strong public education system.

Safe at school – OSSTF/FEESO White Paper on Building Safer School Communities

The OSSTF/FEESO White Paper, Building Safer School Communities and its recommendations were written to frame discussions at OSSTF/FEESO’s Safe at School: Solutions to Workplace Violence summit held in January 2025, and to guide the actions that all stakeholders should take in addressing violence in schools. OSSTF/FEESO organized the summit to create an opportunity for public education supporters from across the province to weigh in on whether the recommendations are the right ones, which ones need to be adjusted, which ones should be scrapped, and which new recommendations should be added to the list.

The students in our collective care deserve safe and nurturing learning environments. They should go home safe and uninjured at the end of the day, as should every worker. The recommendations proposed in this discussion paper are intended to divide this project into concrete, actionable steps. We look forward to working with our allies on this vital project.

Healthy Professional Workers – Gender, Mental Health, Leaves of Absence & Return to Work

OSSTF/FEESO was proud to support this large study comparing the gendered nature of mental health issues and leaves of absence across eight professional sectors. A report and infographics focusing on the education sector can be found below. Click here for more information on the report.

Based on their findings, the researchers have also created a mental health toolkit targeted to teachers and education workers. Find the mental health care at work toolkit here.
